Hage Elementary in Mira Mesa has included swim lessons in their PE education program for the past 18 years at the Ned Baumer Aquatic Center. This year these lessons were followed up with a bridge-to-beach event for eighty-two 5th grade students, hosted by San Diego Fire–Rescue Department (SDFD) Lifeguard Division.
This is the 14th year that SDFD Lifeguards have hosted Bridge to the Beach event. The program was suspended in 2020 because of the pandemic. Students start their day with a safety briefing and then split into groups to learn surfing and stand-up paddle boarding. The activities take place in the bay and ocean front in San Clara Point area.
Participating students have the basic beach safety knowledge before participating and understand the importance of know how to swim before enter the ocean or bay.
