Prevent Drowning Foundation Of San Diego Kicks Off Its Online Swim On Campaign To Help Fund Water-Safety Resources For At-Risk Children

MEDIA ADVISORY

SAN DIEGO, California, August 7, 2020:  As we approach the final stretch of summer 2020, Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego (PDFSanDiego) continues to adjust to the changing reality of  COVID-19. The cancellation of several popular summer fundraising events, such as the Public Pier Jump and the Swim 24Challenge, have shined a brighter light on the inequity of water-safety resources in San Diego County. The lack of water-instruction activities for children in our lower-income communities during this time of the year continues to magnify the pervasive effect of social justice within marginalized communities. PDFSanDiego is encouraging those who annually contribute to the program to consider continuing their support through our online“SwimON” fundraiser.

Drownings continue to be a public health issue and the allocation of resources disproportionately affects African American, Latino, and Native American populations more than any other racial group. It all starts with learning how to swim. Swimming is a life skill that is not easily available to all demographics in our community. According to the USA Swimming Foundation, 79% of children in households with incomes of less than $50,000 have little-to-no swimming ability. Formal swimming lessons reduce the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88%.

“As San Diegans, we all need to help solve the social injustice connected to this issue; PDFSanDiego is committed to leading the fight. We need you to help us make learning to swim a life skill that is available to all children!” said PDFSanDiego President Buc Buchanan.

How can you and the rest of the San Diego community help? For the month of August, visit the online“SwimON”  fundraiser campaign to donate or create your own fundraising page to support PDFSanDiego. Proceeds will fund swim lessons for children in our community that need it most. Also, visit us on social media at @pdfsandiego.
