On June 26, the Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego (PDFSD) proudly participated in the World’s Largest Swim Lesson (WLSL), a global event dedicated to raising awareness about the life-saving importance of swim lessons in drowning prevention. Since its launch in 2010, WLSL has united aquatic facilities across 54 countries and six continents—and this year, San Diego was once again on the map.
The day was nothing short of fantastic, as community and national partners came together to celebrate and promote water safety. The event took place at Colina Del Sol Pool and included a press conference, the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, a Water Safety Fair, and a networking luncheon for aquatic professionals.
We were honored to welcome Rowdy Gaines, Olympic Gold Medalist and Water Safety Advocate, who emceed the day alongside Adam Katchmarchi, and joined San Diego Lifeguard Chief James Gartland, the San Diego Public Library, and San Diego Parks & Recreation in celebrating this annual milestone.
One of the highlights of the day was a special check presentation to San Diego from Step Into Swim and the CEK Foundation, showcasing their commitment to expanding swim lesson access for our community.
Partners in this effort included:
- First Sport San Diego
- Step Into Swim
- The CEK Foundation
Together, these organizations—along with local leaders and families—highlighted the urgent need for drowning prevention efforts and expanded access to swimming lessons.
The World’s Largest Swim Lesson is more than just a day in the pool. It’s a global call to action to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn how to swim, and every family has the resources they need to stay safe around water.
PDFSD is proud to join this worldwide movement, and we remain committed to building partnerships that create a safer San Diego, one swim lesson at a time.
